School districts

You need it by the first day of school. Your vendors know that too.

Relay by Pursuit is a technology reseller for school districts. We help you find and compare the companies that have the solutions you need, and show you what comparable districts paid, so the number you bring to the board holds up.

One of these is probably true in your district.

Most of the people who call us are still at the "this isn't working and I don't know what the options are" phase — which is the right time to talk, not too early.

Outdated systems that need replacing

The student information or finance system is end of life, and the vendor has quoted you a migration.

Bond money with a clock on it

There's bond or millage money with a timeline on it, and the purchase has to be defensible to a board and to taxpayers.

No way to tell the vendors apart

You've started looking for vendors and come back with a list of names, and no sense of which ones actually serve districts your size.

Funded once, lived with for a decade

A bond pays for the purchase. It doesn't tell you whether the purchase was a good one.

The gap

A compliant purchase and a good price are two different things.

Your state's bid threshold and your board's policy decide what your buying process looks like. Neither decides whether the price is good.

A sealed bid with one bidder produces a file, not information. And replacing a twenty-year-old system often never goes out to bid at all, it arrives as a change order on an agenda.

A district can do everything by the book and still pay well above what a comparable district paid the same year. Nothing in the current process would tell you. Relay by Pursuit is here to change that.

What Relay by Pursuit does

What we do before you sign

Verified total-cost pricing benchmarks

What comparable districts actually paid, from their own public records. Not just the license line, but implementation, support, and the escalators as well.

Independent, cost-to-own product selection

No quota for any one vendor. We look at what's running in districts your size, and cost each option over the years you'll own it.

Pre-signature terms diligence

Escalation caps, auto-renewal windows, what it costs to get your data back out. We help you while the contract is still negotiable, the only time reading it changes anything.

From the public record

The price isn't a price. It's a position.

Five Michigan cities approved a move to the same municipal ERP in the same year, and every contract sits in their council packets. This is the spread on implementation, across the four whose scope was word-for-word identical.

Implementation fee quoted on identical scope · four cities

As a multiple of that same city's annual software fees.
1× means implementation cost the same as a full year of the software itself.

How it works

From a phone call to a decision.

We're with you the whole way, so what you choose is the best value for the people you serve.

1. Tell us what's in front of you

A quote, a renewal date, or a line in next year's budget.

2. We pull the comparable contracts

Public records from school districts like yours, with the source behind every figure.

3. We cost the options and read the terms

Total cost to own, plus the contract language that matters in year three.

4. The purchase runs through us

We're the reseller on the transaction, on the terms that came out of step three.

Questions we get

What district staff ask first.

Does this purchase hit our bid threshold?

Depends on your state's threshold for supplies and equipment, your board's policy, and whether this is a new purchase or an option under a contract you already competed. Whether software counts toward that threshold is genuinely ambiguous in some states. We'll tell you what the record shows, not that you're exposed, to make a sale.

Can you break the quote out for the board packet?

Yes, and it matters when the board votes in public. Vendors quote one bundled number; a board packet needs licenses, implementation, training, support and warranty on separate lines. We get that from the vendor in writing.

What's going to cost us that isn't in the quote?

Usually rostering and integration with the systems you already run, migrating student and finance history, and training past the included hours. Those get priced after you've committed, often over the summer. We ask for them in writing up front and name implementation as the vendor's scope in the agreement.

We're buying off a cooperative contract. Isn't the price already competed?

The license price was competed once, by someone else, often a district with very different enrollment. Implementation, data migration and annual support usually weren't, and that's where the first-year number moves.

The money is one-time. Can the scope be phased?

Usually. A first quote often carries modules you won't use until year two or three, and deferred scope isn't accruing escalators. We'll tell you which pieces can wait and price the smaller version, which matters more when the money is one-time.

Can you show us what a comparable district paid?

Yes, from public records, with the source document attached. District contracts and board minutes are public, so you can verify any of it yourself. We don't name an agency in anything we publish without their written sign-off.

Have a quote in hand? Or no idea yet?

Both are a good reason to talk. The first conversation is usually about what's end of life, what the board has asked about, and what's already on an agenda.
